SATURDAY LOOKS GOOD TO ME (Polyvinyl Records)
As many of Saturday Looks Good to Me's listeners will attest, Michigan's own greasy haired heartthrob, Fred Thomas, is the indie rock generation's answer to the masterfully crafted soundwalls and legendary arrangements of such hall of famers as Phil Spector, Brian Wilson and George Martin. Picking up where 2003's critically acclaimed four-track masterpiece "All Your Summer Songs" left off, "Every Night" finds the band both expanding on previous styles and evolving into something brand new. The carefree '60's pop vibe that has run through the band's entire catalog is still prevalent, but you'll also detect a new undercurrent somewhere between poetry and desperation. The songwriting, production techniques and musical performances have been honed in and pushed beyond all previous efforts, culminating in Saturday Looks Good To Me's most lyrically astute, flawlessly arranged and fully-realized work to date. Celebrating the multiple format world we now live in, the new album caters to both the digital and analog
cravings that will delight audiophiles the world over. Mixes, vocalists, and performances differ between compact disc and long-player versions. But they're good – both versions, and hopefully you'll hear what we fell in love with months ago when the songs first began to filter into the office.
THE BLACK ATLANTIC (Ham Radio Communications)
The Black Atlantic is former Shai Hulud vocalist Geert van der Velde's singer / songwriter project. Started as a project with his best friend, Menno Vos (drums) it quickly turned into something more serious after van der Velde recorded his first song in February of 2006. The song was a Valentine's gift to his then girlfriend, now wife. Recording 'Send This Home (a letter in sonics)' gave the project the momentum that it needed to fully come alive.
In January of 2007 The Black Atlantic made it's first live appearance at the Eurosonic festival followed by a short clubtour of the Netherlands around Valentine's day, in commeration of The Black Atlantic's unofficial start a year before. In March and April of that year The Black Atlantic (with a new line up) supported UK singer/songwriter Luke Pickett for 10 dates in the UK. May saw the band crossing 12 countries in just 2 weeks.
In July, van der Velde got married in NY and managed to play 13 US (East Coast) dates around the release of The Black Atlantic's debut EP "Send This Home". Which was recorded early fall of 2006 by him with the help of various contributing friends. Five Point Records (USA) released it on July 10th, 2007. November of 2007 saw van der Velde enter the studio with a complete new (touring) line-up. Bassplayer Matthijs Herder steered the band through a week long recording session at his Paperboat studio. The band came out with 3 new songs; 2 of which will commercially released on a 7" / EP to be released on van der Velde's brand new label Ham Radio Communications in 2008. Recently The Black Atlantic signed a worldwide (ex-USA) distribution deal with Cargo through German Indie label Midsummer Records.
Most recently van der Velde finished his first solo tours of the USA opening up for NYC singer/songwriter Tim Williams and Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.
